FALL OF GREECE
- There was conflict and competition in Greece’s city states, this breaks down the sense of community
- After war with Persians, Sparta – Athens fight each other
- Increase of tension and conflict between aristocracy and poor classes
- After Alexander’s death, empire is divided among his generals
-They don’t have enough children to keep the population up
-Population loss, rather than growth
- Some Greek colonies aren’t loyal to Greece
- Neighboring countries became stronger and more unified than Greece
- In time, Philip of Macedonia had strong military, gave power to conquer several city states
- Greed was also Greece’s problem, after they were rich and they thought was strong, they became too prideful
-Athenians were more interested in material wealth
- Also Rome was increasing in size and power and trade. (note: 146 BC, Romans had already conquered Greek city-states)
- City-states had different forms of government (e.g. Sparta and Athens)
- Peace, people become lazy
